World Telecommunication Day is celebrated annually every May 17 since 1969.
The event is aimed at helping to raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies can bring to societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide.
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of world telecommunication day with the theme "bridging the standardization gap", an ICT expert Bolanle Oladejo says telecommunications has helped Nigeria with its Economic growth, reaching out to the masses.
Bolanle also stated ICT has improved different sectors of the economy as it is very easy to access especially to entrepreneurs, as telecommunications can be called the oxygen of communication.
Another respondent Adejumo explained that telecommunications has been a useful tool though it is still in its developing face and can be distracting at times for students if not properly used.
The celebration of this day increases awareness about the positive communication technology among people.
It has the purpose to make information and communication easily accessible to more people in remote and rural areas.
