One of the basic needs of life is access to quality and affordable health care. This however seems to be a tall dream for many Nigerians as they continue to battle with the inability to get good health care service.
In this report, Impact Business Radio’s Oluwaseun Oyebade takes a look at what can be done to achieve universal and affordable quality health care.
Universal health coverage is the number one goal of the World Health Organisation geared towards achieving and ensuring that everyone can access the care they need, when they need it, and right in the heart of the community.
But it is quite evident that millions of people still have no access at all to health care. Findings have shown that millions more are forced to choose between health care and other daily expenses such as food, clothing and shelter.
This may have informed the reason why WHO is focusing on universal health coverage for this year’s World Health Day.
Lending his voice to the attainment of affordable quality health care, the executive Secretary of Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme, Shola Akande, explained that attention should be given to preventive medicine than curative medicine as it is much cheaper in maintaining a good health.
While saying that Western lifestyles have not been beneficial to Nigerians in terms of health, he added that Nigerians can maximize the little they have to get basic nutritious foods that will enhance the sustainability of healthy lifestyles.
The expert advised Nigerians need to avail themselves of the opportunity of getting registered under an insurance scheme to be able to benefit there-from.
Achieving universal health coverage is one of the key targets of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development; hence efforts must be geared towards ensuring that this comes into fruition.
